  The Dorn-Breuss Therapy
What is the Dorn-Breuss Therapy?

The Dorn-Breuss Therapy is part of the manual manipulative class of physical medicine, which
was developed in Germany about 30 years ago by Dieter Dorn. This involves the subtle and soft correction of subluxed (out of their normal position) vertebra and joints. Almost all the joints in the human body can be corrected safely. Quick results are experienced at the first session.

How does the Dorn-Breuss Therapy work?

1 The practitioner utilizes his thumb and fingers to correct the joints into normal alignment
2 It is a soft manipulative therapy without high velocity motion, but rather a soft continuous motion on the particular joint or region that needs to be corrected.
3 The correction is accomplished dynamically
4 Corrections can be repeated often, as is necessary depending on the history of the pain.
5 The patient co-operates actively
6 There are very few risks and contra-indications when using this therapy.
7 Once the joint is corrected, patients experience immediate pain relief, be it sciatica, severe back pain, pins and needle in extremities or headaches.

Risks, Cautions and Contra-indications
In the last four years that I have been applying the Dorn Therapy in my own practice I personally
have not had any adverse reaction and not a single injury, but there are certain preconditions that
should be managed cautiously or avoided.

1 People with ACUTE physical injuries should not be treated immediately, only once inflammation has settled.
2 X-ray of acutely injured joint of body should be ordered to exclude any possible fractures of bones
3 Cancer patients cannot be healed with this manual therapy and as such are not a contra- indication for Dorn Therapy. Each person must be assessed individually whether the therapy will be of benefit, although any patient will feel a sense of relaxation after the therapy because the energy flow is corrected
4 Any acute or chronic inflammation or flare-up of a specific joint should not be manipulated. Once the swelling has subsided, Dorn Therapy can be applied successfully
5 An acute vertebral disc pro-laps or herniasion with severe pain, numbness in both legs and incontinence of the bladder and colon is contra-indicated and should be referred to a specialist
.
6 Patients on chronic oral cortisone treatment can have a higher risk of brittle bone and incidence of fractures.
7 Patients suffering with osteoporosis are not contra-indicated, but such cases must be approached carefully and affected vertebra should not be manipulated. The Breuss massage is excellent for these patients
8 Severe acute Migraines must be avoided, but can be relieved with BEST and EFT therapy and the Breuss massage until the attack has subsided, then the appropriate cervical vertebra can be adjusted.

What can be treated with the Dorn-Breuss Therapy

Virtually all joint related pains can be treated. The following conditions have shown to
respond well:

1 Arthritis in the joints: Due to the pain in the joints, patients become reluctant to use the limbs. The muscular structure around the joint atrophies ( it looses its strength and weakens). This leads to a reduced blood supply to the joint space and cartilage. Dorn-Breuss therapy improves the circulation to the joint. Arthrosis of the joints can either be slowed down or stopped, depending on the stage of the disease.
2 Prolapsed Disk and Disk Protrusion: Disks are a type of cartilaginous tissue situated between the vertebra that act as shock absorbers and reduce the pressure on the vertebra. Pain due to prolapsed disks can be relieved when the Breuss massage is utilized initially.
3

Breathing restricted: When all other pathology is ruled out, e.g. pneumonia, asthma, or heart related causes. Then the restricted sensation or shortness of breath could be due to a misaligned thoracic vertebra T3.

4

GOUT: This occurs due to an accumulation of uric acid in a crystallized form that is deposited in the joints due to inadequate filtration by the kidneys. With the Dorn-Breuss therapy thoracic vertebra T10 is corrected. Then all the joints of the lower extremities are corrected and re-aligned to reduce the re-occurrence

5 Angina and Heart Arrthythmias: Irregular heart beats due to stress, constant negative emotions, chemical imbalances (Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium), medication, food, too much: caffeine, toxins and severe organic illnesses. A possible misaligned Thoracic vertebra T2, after correction could improve the heart beat. It leads to the relaxation of coronary arteries that improve oxygenation to the heart muscle and reduce the chest pain.
6 Lumbago (Lower Back Pain): This occurs when severe pain is experienced in the lower back. The slightest movement or bending of the back leads to pain. This is due to subluxation of a single or a few lumbar vertebra. One feels as though your back has locked up and you cannot straighten up without experiencing severe localized pain in the lower back. Here the patient lies comfortable on his/her stomach and the pain is eased with the Breuss vertebral massage. Then once the majority of the pain has subsided I will proceed with the Dorn therapy and correct the misaligned lumbar vertebra.
7 Sciatica: The sciatic nerve is the thickest and longest nerve in the human body. The Sciatic nerve begins at the level of the forth vertebra and moves over the buttocks area and then down the leg. The causes of sciatic pain can be due to compression between the forth and fifth lumbar vertebra, pressure from a vertebral disk onto the nerve, hardened (spasm) muscles can squeeze the nerve or a tumor can squeeze the nerve. Sciatica pain can vary in severity and distribution. The distribution varies from Upper thigh pains to calf pains to pains in the knee and toes. The pain can also vary from acute shooting down pains to a dull burning sensation anywhere down along the leg. Sensations of pins and needles and even lameness in limbs are due to sciatica.
8

Pain in the buttocks area either one sided or both: This is due to the sacral-iliac joint being subluxed. Very painful or dull pain is experienced in that area and could radiate to the front and into the groin area. Pain is also experienced when sitting for long periods.

9

Knee joint: Knee pain can be either due to local injuries to the knee or occupational related chronic stresses or the pain can be referred from the back due to a nerve impingement.

10 Migraines and headaches: The causes for migraines and headaches can be many. They can range from allergies, foods, chemicals, and emotional stresses. Endocrine hormone related disorders, such as thyroid, insulin, and aldosterone. Food intolerances, such as wheat, chocolate and sugar. Eye stresses, due to weak lenses, incorrect glasses. Tumor growths, subluxed vertebra or liver and gallbladder intoxication. I will examine the neck and back vertebra and look at the patient in totality to establish the cause.
11 Shoulder pains: Can be a variety of causes ranging from arthritis in the shoulder joint, referred pain from the neck vertebra and thoracic vertebra to inflamed ligaments, frozen shoulder syndrome. All of these can be eased and the pain can be relieved a great deal.
12 Elbow pains: Tennis elbow and golfers elbow (Epicondylitis) are frequently seen with sports people utilizing their arms in sports activities. This can be due to a combination of either the neck vertebra that is subluxed and or the elbow joint. I examine both areas and treat accordingly.
13 Internal and digestive disorders: The function of the internal organs can be affected negatively if the corresponding nerve supply to each organ is adversely affected on its path from the spinal cord. This can occur when a vertebra is subluxed. Once the appropriate vertebra is returned to its original position, the function of the affected organ will return to its normal state.
14 Tooth and Jaw pains: TMJ subluxation causes constant grinding of the teeth that results in people experiencing jaw pain headaches. This can become very distressing. A subtle manipulation of the jaw will result in quick relief of this painful situation.
15 Paresis and Parasthesia (numbness) When nerves are impinged it can either affect the sensory or motor portion of the nerve or both. This will result in either a lack of sensation in a particular region or muscular weakness respectively. Symptoms will be felt as constant or intermittent burning sensations in particular areas, especially the peripheral parts of the body. The symptoms can also be translated as pins and needles in the periphery.
16 Neck A stiff neck can be due to a subluxation of any of the cervical vertebra and also the upper thoracic vertebra. This often leads to tension related headaches, painful and stiff neck and shoulders.
17 Numbness in fingers and burning sensation of the hands are often due to disc disorders in the neck. A sub acute prolapsed disc can be cupped after two weeks and then corrected.
18 Numbness in the feet and toes and burning sensation in the feet: are often due to disc disorders in the lower back vertebra. A sub acute disc can be cupped after two weeks and then corrected
19 Epileptics: In epileptics it is important to inspect the neck and especially the first cervical vertebra.
20 Concentration and ADD problems: It is necessary to measure the leg length, and the ileosacral joint and the cervical vertebra C1 must be palpated for a possible miss-alignment.
21 Shortsightedness: sudden deterioration in the ability to read. It is important to have your eyes tested, but the possibility exists that the cervical vertebra C2 could be out of alignment.
22

Sinus Congestion (Chronic): Diet, allergies, emotions (yes can you believe it, emotions play an important role) and pollution are an important contributor to this condition. Structurally I will investigate the alignment of the cervical vertebra C2/ and C3.

23

Tinnitis (Ringing in the ears): Here I normally investigate the following structures; cervical vertebra C1, C7, the jaw, the leg length and sometimes also the ileosacral joint and lumbar vertebra L 5. If the vertebral structure was not miss aligned then the normal medical route of investigation needs to be conducted.

24 Dizziness (Vertigo) This sensation of feeling unstable on your feet and sometimes it feels that your are pulled down to the ground. I usually palpate the ileosacral joint due to its craneosacral cerebrospinal fluid relationship. Cervical vertebra C1 must be palpated and if necessary adjusted to improve equal oxygenation through both vertebral arteries. Finally C7 if out of its alignment can affect the balance between the head and trunk. If the entire vertebral column is aligned and symptoms have not improved within a day additional medical tests need to be conducted to establish the cause.
25 Cramps in the Calf muscles: I no other medical cause can be established; such as deep vein thrombosis then I will examine the ileosacral, knee and ankle joints, the leg length and also palpate the lumbar vertebra number L 4and L 5.
26

Insomnia (Sleeplessness) I have been applying the Dorn-Breuss Therapy over the last four years and I see it every day that it releases the stress from the back and neck muscles. The therapy results in an improved nerve and blood flow to all the organs, specifically to the brain and heart. So many patients have responded so well that they are able to sleep through the night again. They also wake up more refreshed.

27

Fibromyalgia: This condition can be overcome. I had some very good and good results. With fibromyalgia I investigate all the joints and al the vertebra. Dorn-Breuss therapy assists in releasing the nerve block from the vertebra to the muscles. Secondly it also carries a strong emotional root cause, which must be investigated, treated and released. The negative emotions I normally treat utilizing the BEST therapy and counseling.

28 Hypertension (High Blood pressure) Besides stress, incorrect foods, overweight, specific vertebra could be out of alignment. The cervical vertebra C1, C6 and Thoracic vertebra Th 2 are important to adjust and also the ileosacral joint due to the crane sacral balance. Here again I had good results in reducing cases of severe raised blood pressure.

This wonderful therapy gives me joy and also brings new challenges every day. I see people walking in with severe pain and walking out with a smile on their faces. This encourages me to carry on helping people everyday of my life.
