Homeopathy and its future
Homeopathy has been gaining popularity and acceptance by the public over the last 20 years. This can be ascribed to the public looking for safer avenues for treatment with less side-effects and long term consequences. Homeopathy has been an accepted modality of treatment in India for more than a centaury because it is cost effective safe and effective in treatment.
India has made a big success of such a decision. Many homeopathic hospitals an learning institutions have been established and research has improved the understanding of homeopathy. I believe that homeopathy can be the similar answer for Africa’s health problems. We know that homeopathy can treat Cholera, Malaria and HIV , Hypertension effectively, especially when you do not have any drugs available because of the cost factor.
Homeopathic medicine can unfortunately not be patented and thus will not be a big money spinner for pharmaceutical companies.
Governments and Health Departments will have to decide if they are serious to take control of health issues in Africa
Homeopathy and Published Research
The British medical journal has published 105 controlled clinical trials, 81 of which showed that homeopathic medicines were effective in treating sick people. Final year students studying in South Africa must complete a research study as a part requirement for their masters qualification.
Homeopathy it’s Status in South Africa
Homeopathy is officially recognized by the South African Government as a legitimate form of treatment for a great variety of diseases. Homeopathy is under control of the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa.
Homeopathy is offered as a six year fulltime course at University of Johannesburg and Durban University of Technology.
General principals in Homeopathy
In this way, from experiment to experiment, Hahnemann found that his initial hypothesis was constantly confirmed. So it is no longer a hypothesis but a law of nature, a general biological law, The Law of Similars, which can be formulated in three parts.
| |
1 |
All pharmacologically active substances produce in the healthy and susceptible individual, a set of symptoms characteristic of the substance used. This was the result of experiments on healthy individuals. |
| |
2 |
Every ill subject shows a set of morbid symptoms, which are characteristic of his disease. These morbid symptoms can be defined as “changes in the ways of feeling or acting” of the patient because of his illness. |
| |
3 |
The cure, shown by the objective disappearance of the morbid symptoms, can be obtained by the prescription of very small or infinitesimal doses, of the substance that experimentally produces the same symptoms in the healthy individual as those of the ill patient. |
Homeopathy is therefore not, as some would like it to be believed, the hair-brained idea of some visionary, nor is it a philosophy or a mystique.
Starting from a hypothesis arising out of clinical facts, it is a therapeutic method, perfected over years of clinical and toxicological experiment.
The Homeopathic method produces an individualization of treatment. It constitutes an individual terrain therapy and the homeopathic drug appears as a specific stimulant to the organism as opposed to traditional medicines, which are coercive in nature.
Hence, the second point to remember about homeopathic therapy, is the methodology. In summary, it involves superimposing two reactional clinical profiles:
| |
* |
The reactive clinical profile of a drug, that is to say its pathogenetical action. |
| |
* |
The complete clinical profile of the patient including classical and homeopathic semiology.(Signs) |
| |
|
|
The Particular signs to the personal behaviour of the patient
This is the homeopathic semiology (signs). It includes aspects of classical semiology (signs) which are clinical and cannot be denied, but it compliments it when:
| |
* |
To the general and physical signs are added the Modalities. A
modality is a qualification of a symptom in the sense of its aggravation or its improvement under the influence of external circumstances or the environment: |
| |
|
- Heat or cold |
| |
|
- Rest or movement |
| |
|
- Time of the day: aggravation or improvement |
| |
|
- Atmospheric circumstances: Dryness, Humidity, seaside or mountains |
| |
|
- Physiological circumstances: periods, sleep, diarrhoea, vomiting |
| |
* |
To the functional signs, which are the subjective symptoms of the patient, are added any or all of the personal reactions of the patient. The entire general behaviour of the patient is taken into account: |
| |
|
- General behaviour such as agitation, prostration, somnolence. |
| |
|
- Sexual behavior. |
| |
|
- Alimentary (food) desires or dislikes |
| |
|
- Disorders of sleep and dreams, but not taking into account any psycho- analytical interpretations |
| |
|
All these changes in the behaviour of a patient in his/her disease constitute the “mental symptoms”. Sometimes the term “psychic symptoms “ is used incorrectly and is used to the detriment of the homeopathic method. |
| |
* |
To the aetiological signs (the causes of disease)
Certain factors are added over and above the laboratory investigations. Homeopathy takes into account certain aetiological circumstances such as: emotional upsets (fear, mourning, grief, arguments, disappointments etc.), trauma, changes in the climate, etc. |
Hence, the homeopathic method produces and individualization of treatment. It constitutes an Individual Terrain therapy and the homeopathic drug appears as a specific stimulant to the organism as opposed to traditional medicines which are coercive.
Homeopathic semiology (signs) does not replace classical semiology (signs) which traditionally leads to diagnosis of disease. It completes the latter by taking into account the small nuances of each patient, and therefore leads to the diagnosis of the homeopathic drug.
How are Homeopathic Medicines made?
Homeopathic medicines are manufactured through a specific pharmacological procedure called “potentisation”, which is a process of diluting and shaking and further diluting and shaking. Lets take the plant of Belladonna as an example again. A tincture of the Belladonna berries is prepared and then one part of the tincture is diluted with nine parts of distilled water.
This mixture is then vigorously shaken 10 times. One part of this dilution is then used and the mixed with nine parts of distilled water and then shaken This process is continued up to a million times and even higher. Most commonly they potentise the medicines to 3,6,30,200 1000.
When a medicine is diluted one part in nine parts, it is called an x “potency”, as in 3x, 6x, or 30x or the decimal potency scale.
When a medicine is diluted one part in ninety-nine parts, it is called a c “potency” as in 3c, 6c, 30c or the centecimal potency scale
